🌿
Neroli essential oil is distilled from the delicate white or pale pink blossoms of the bitter orange tree - also known as Orange Blossom. Native to India and later introduced to the Mediterranean during the Crusades, this aromatic tree became deeply rooted in cultural traditions across many regions.

The bitter orange tree, celebrated for its fragrant flowers, has long been associated with ceremonies, especially weddings, symbolising innocence, freshness, and fertility. Its name, "Neroli," comes from a 16th-century Italian princess who popularised the use of this exquisite flower’s essence in her perfumes and baths.

Even in ancient China, the allure of Orange Blossom was so strong that the flowers were infused in oils for daily rituals. Historical records even show the use of steam distillation as early as the 12th century.

Today, Neroli continues to enchant perfumers and aromatherapists alike - cherished for both its captivating scent and its traditional use in emotional and therapeutic support.

A little history

🌸 The History of Neroli Essential Oil
Neroli essential oil is distilled from the fragrant flowers of the bitter orange tree (Citrus aurantium), a tree native to India and Southeast Asia. It was brought to the Mediterranean region during the time of the Crusades and quickly became beloved for its intoxicating floral aroma and therapeutic properties.

🌿 Ancient Beginnings
In ancient China, the blossoms of the bitter orange were so highly valued that they were infused in oils for use in cosmetics and skin treatments.

By the 12th century, early forms of steam distillation were already in use in the Arab world, and it’s believed Neroli may have been among the floral waters and oils distilled at the time.

👑 The Name “Neroli”
The essential oil gained its famous name in 17th-century Italy, thanks to Anna Maria de La Tremoille, the Princess of Nerola, a small town near Rome. She famously used the fragrant oil to perfume her gloves, bathwater, and even her clothing. The scent became so fashionable among the elite that it was eventually called "Neroli" in her honor.

💒 Symbol of Innocence and Purity
Orange blossoms have long been used in wedding ceremonies across the Mediterranean as a symbol of purity, love, and fertility. Brides often wore wreaths of orange blossom flowers in their hair - a tradition that lasted well into the Victorian era.

🧴 From Perfumery to Therapy
Over time, Neroli oil became a prized ingredient in high-end perfumery for its complex aroma - both sweet and slightly green - and was also traditionally used to treat nervous conditions, skin concerns, and digestive troubles.

Neroli’s legacy continues today, cherished for its emotional healing, skin-regenerating, and calming properties - a true botanical treasure with centuries of use and reverence behind it.
